Many travellers come to Morocco dreaming about Marrakech, the Sahara Desert or the ancient kasbahs of the south. But sometimes, one of the most memorable parts of the journey happens in between.
Leaving Marrakech and crossing the High Atlas Mountains is not simply a transfer from one destination to another. It is an experience in itself. As the road climbs into the mountains, the city slowly disappears behind you. The landscape changes, the air becomes cooler and small villages begin to appear along the hillsides. This is where the journey towards southern Morocco really begins.
From Marrakech Into the Mountains
The scenery changes quickly after leaving Marrakech. Flat plains gradually become hills, then mountains, valleys and winding roads. Along the way, you pass traditional villages, small cafés and viewpoints overlooking dramatic landscapes. The High Atlas connects Marrakech with destinations such as Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Sahara Desert. For many travellers, this is their first opportunity to see a quieter and more rural side of Morocco. And sometimes the best stops are not famous monuments at all. They are simply places where the view makes you want to stop the car.
The Tizi n’Tichka Pass

One of the most spectacular parts of the route is the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, one of the main mountain crossings in Morocco. The road climbs high into the Atlas and offers impressive views of valleys, rocky peaks and small settlements.
Depending on the season, the colours can change completely. Spring can bring greener landscapes, while summer and autumn highlight the red, brown and ochre tones of the mountains. In winter, the highest areas can even receive snow.
The journey is full of curves, viewpoints and small places where it is worth stopping for a photo, a coffee or simply a few minutes to enjoy the scenery.
Discovering Rural Morocco
The High Atlas is not only about landscapes. Many of the communities along the route are Amazigh villages, where traditions and rural life remain an important part of daily life. You may see houses built from earth and stone, shepherds with their animals, small fields or villages that almost seem to blend into the mountains. These simple scenes are part of what makes travelling through Morocco by road so special. You are not only moving between tourist attractions.
Towards Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

After crossing the mountains, the landscape gradually becomes drier. The green valleys give way to rocky scenery, palm groves and traditional kasbah architecture. Many routes continue towards Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco’s most famous fortified villages, before reaching Ouarzazate and continuing further south. In just a few hours, you can leave the busy streets of Marrakech, cross high mountain landscapes and arrive in an environment that already feels much closer to the desert. That transition is one of the most beautiful parts of travelling through Morocco.
Don’t Rush the Journey
It can be tempting to think only about the final destination. Maybe you want to reach Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate or the Sahara as quickly as possible but the High Atlas is worth enjoying slowly, stop at a viewpoint, drink mint tea in a small mountain café, take a moment to look at the villages and valleys around you. Sometimes these unplanned stops become the moments you remember most.
A Natural Gateway to Southern Morocco
Crossing the High Atlas feels like entering another part of the country. On one side is Marrakech, with its medina, gardens and lively streets. On the other are kasbahs, valleys, gorges and eventually the Sahara. The mountains connect these two worlds and that is what makes the journey so special. You are not simply travelling from Marrakech to the desert. You are watching Morocco transform kilometre by kilometre.
Enjoy the Journey
A great trip through Morocco is not only about visiting famous places. It is also about the roads, landscapes and small moments that connect them.
The High Atlas is a perfect example. You do not need to trek or climb mountains to appreciate it. Sometimes all you need is enough time to stop, enjoy the scenery and discover the quieter side of Morocco along the way.
Cross the High Atlas, enjoy its landscapes and villages, and discover the road that leads from Marrakech towards Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Sahara.
