Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Moroccan Desert Is Better?

Both are popular desert destinations, but they offer very different experiences.

The simple answer is: Choose Merzouga if you want the classic Sahara experience with large golden dunes. Choose Zagora if you have less time and want a shorter desert trip from Marrakech. And if you are looking for something more remote and adventurous, consider travelling beyond Zagora to Erg Chigaga.

Merzouga: The Classic Sahara Experience

Merzouga is one of the most famous desert destinations in Morocco. The village is located beside Erg Chebbi, a spectacular area of high golden dunes that looks exactly like the Sahara many travellers imagine before visiting Morocco.
Merzouga is quite far from Marrakech, so the journey should be seen as part of the experience.

• Ride a camel across the dunes at sunset.
• Spend the night in a desert camp.
• Watch the sunrise over the sand.
• Try sandboarding.
• Explore the desert by 4×4.
• Enjoy the silence and open landscapes of the Sahara.

The dunes are the main attraction, and they are easily accessible from the village. For first-time visitors to Morocco, Merzouga is usually the most impressive option because the desert landscape is dramatic and immediately recognisable.

What Is the Journey to Merzouga Like?

Merzouga is quite far from Marrakech, so the journey should be seen as part of the experience.
A typical route may include: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
This means you do not simply spend hours driving through empty roads. Along the way, you pass through some of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Morocco. For this reason, I usually recommend at least three days for a Marrakech–Merzouga desert trip. If you have four days, the journey becomes much more relaxed and allows more time for stops, local villages and scenic viewpoints. Trying to visit Merzouga too quickly can mean spending too much of your holiday inside a vehicle.

Zagora: A Good Choice When You Have Less Time

Zagora is closer to Marrakech and is often chosen by travellers who only have two days available for a desert trip.
The journey takes you across the High Atlas Mountains and through the beautiful Drâa Valley, with its palm groves, traditional villages and dry mountain landscape The area is more rocky and varied, and the dunes close to Zagora are smaller than the huge dunes of Erg Chebbi.s. Zagora itself offers a very different desert environment from Merzouga. This is important because many travellers book a “Zagora desert tour” expecting to see enormous Sahara dunes. If that is your main goal, Merzouga will usually be the better choice. However, Zagora can still be a very enjoyable experience if you have limited time and want to discover southern Morocco, spend a night in a desert camp and experience a different side of the country.

What About Erg Chigaga?

This is where the comparison becomes more interesting. If you travel farther south from Zagora, towards M’Hamid, you can reach Erg Chigaga, one of Morocco’s most impressive and remote dune areas. Unlike Merzouga, where the dunes are easily reached by road, Erg Chigaga normally requires travelling across desert tracks by 4×4. That extra journey is part of the adventure. The area feels more isolated and wild, with fewer buildings and less tourism infrastructure around you.
So it is useful to distinguish between:
Zagora: easier to reach, smaller nearby dunes and ideal for shorter trips.
Erg Chigaga: larger dunes, more remote and more adventurous.
For travellers who want to feel far away from towns and modern life, Erg Chigaga can be an excellent alternative to Merzouga.

Which Desert Is Better If You Only Have Two Days?

If you only have two days and one night from Marrakech, Zagora is the more realistic option. You can cross the Atlas Mountains, travel through southern landscapes, explore part of the Drâa Valley and spend a night in a desert camp. However, it is important to have realistic expectations. If seeing impressive golden dunes is one of the main reasons for your trip to Morocco, it may be worth adding an extra day and choosing Merzouga instead.

Which Desert Is Better for First-Time Visitors?

For most travellers visiting Morocco for the first time, I would choose Merzouga. The landscape around Erg Chebbi is spectacular, and the experience feels much closer to the traditional image people have of the Sahara.

Which Desert Is Better for Adventure?

If you want something more remote, consider Erg Chigaga rather than Zagora itself. The off-road journey, the isolation and the lack of nearby towns give it a stronger feeling of adventure. Merzouga is easier and more comfortable to access. Erg Chigaga is more remote. Neither is necessarily better. It simply depends on the kind of experience you want.

What About Desert Camps?

Both Merzouga and the Zagora region offer desert camps, ranging from simple accommodation to more comfortable luxury-style tents.

Before booking, it is worth asking a few questions:

• Where exactly is the camp?
• Is it surrounded by dunes?
• Does the tent have a private bathroom?
• How will you reach the camp?
• Is dinner included?
• Is the camel ride included or optional?
• How much time will you actually spend in the desert?

The location of the camp can make a big difference.

So, Merzouga or Zagora?

There is no single answer for every traveller.

Choose Merzouga if:

• You want large golden Sahara dunes.
• It is your first trip to Morocco.
• You have at least three days.
• The desert is one of the highlights of your trip.
• You want a wide choice of camps and activities.

Choose Zagora if:

• You only have two days from Marrakech.
• You prefer a shorter journey.
• You want to combine the desert with the Drâa Valley.
• You are happy with a smaller-scale desert experience.

Choose Erg Chigaga if:

• You want a more remote desert.
• You enjoy adventure and off-road travel.
• You prefer somewhere that feels more isolated.
• You have enough time to travel farther south.

For most first-time visitors, Merzouga is the safest recommendation.

But the best choice always depends on your itinerary and how much time you have.
